July 1st, 2007

Baton Rouge -- Dr. Donald R. Avery, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Natchitoches, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the United Methodist Foundation of Louisiana. His two-year term began when his election was ratified at the United Methodist Louisiana Annual Conference in June.

Dr. Avery earned a B.A. degree in 1968 from Dillard University in New Orleans and a Master of Theology degree in 1971 from Boston University School of Theology. During his pastoral career, he has served as District Superintendent of the Alexandria District of the Louisiana Conference and as pastor of several other United Methodist churches in Louisiana. In 1976, Dr. Avery graduated from Southern University School of Law with honors and began a distinct and varied career in law. He returned to full time ministry in 1992.

The current Board of Trustees was pleased with the election. Rob Fairly, President of the Foundation, said, "We look forward to Don's presence on the Board. His background and experience within the Conference and the business arena will be quite an asset."

Located in Baton Rouge, the United Methodist Foundation of Louisiana was founded in 1975 and serves United Methodist churches, institutions and individuals within the Louisiana Annual Conference, providing financial management, consultation and education, loans and grants. It is one of the largest United Methodist foundations, with over $128 million in assets.
